About the author

Born in Stockholm in 1875, Marika Stiernstedt grew up in an aristocratic and Catholic milieu but became known for socially engaged writing and public debate. She built a reputation as a productive and widely read Swedish author in the first half of the twentieth century, while also working as a journalist.

Her novels often explored disappointment, independence, and the pressures placed on women, and she is remembered as an important voice in modern Swedish literature. She also wrote about the suffering of Armenians during the genocide in the Ottoman Empire, showing how strongly her writing connected literature with political conscience.

Stiernstedt was a major figure in Sweden’s literary world and became the first woman to chair the Swedish Writers’ Association. She died in 1954, leaving behind a body of work that joined sharp social observation with emotional insight.
