About the author

Born in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1855, Marie Beeg—also known as Marie Ille-Beeg—became known in Germany as both an author and an illustrator. She studied painting and developed a creative life that joined visual art with storytelling, a combination that shaped much of her work for younger readers.

She published children's books and stories, including illustrated works such as Die Reise ins Puppenland and Die Vierblättrigen. Her writing is remembered for its lively, imaginative quality, while her illustrations show the eye of someone deeply trained in art.

Marie Beeg died in 1927. Though not widely known outside German literary history today, she remains an appealing figure for readers interested in classic children's literature and in authors who brought words and images together in their own distinctive way.
