Born in 1858 in what is now Ukraine, Marie Bashkirtseff was raised in a wealthy family and spent much of her short life in Europe, especially in France. She studied art seriously in Paris and worked with remarkable drive, determined to make a name for herself as a painter.
Alongside her art, she kept a journal from her youth onward. Published after her death, it drew wide attention for its candid account of ambition, loneliness, illness, and the pressure she felt to achieve something lasting.
Bashkirtseff died in 1884, still in her twenties, but her paintings and diary secured her reputation. She remains memorable not only for her talent, but for the striking directness with which she wrote about wanting to live fully and be remembered.
