About the author

Born Lucie Marie Marguerite Monceau in Paris on September 15, 1871, she took her mother’s name for the stage and became known as Marguerite Moreno. She was a member of the Comédie-Française from 1890 to 1903 and was associated with Stéphane Mallarmé and the Symbolist circle, helping place her at the heart of French theatrical life.

Her career stretched across both theater and film, and she became known for a distinctive, lively stage presence. She married the writer Marcel Schwob in 1900, and later appeared in many films during the 1930s and 1940s as French cinema expanded.

Moreno remained a recognizable figure in the arts for decades, admired for her intelligence, humor, and strong personality as a performer. She died in Touzac, Lot, on July 14, 1948.
