About the author

Born Julian Margaret Maitland Warrender in 1855, she was a Scottish historian and author from a prominent family connected with Lochend near Dunbar. Reference sources describe her as the daughter of Sir George Warrender, and note that she lived in Edinburgh and later in London.

Her writing focused on Scottish history and landscape. Surviving records of her books show her interest in both family and regional history, including Marchmont and the Humes of Polwarth and Illustrations of Scottish History, as well as the much more widely circulated Walks near Edinburgh, a book that guides readers through the places, stories, and historical echoes around the city.

She died in 1950. Although not a household name now, her books remain useful for readers who enjoy older historical writing with a strong sense of Scottish setting and heritage.
