by Margaret Allen
Born in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, on December 8, 1922, she became known for romance novels that often drew on the landscapes and communities of her home county. Her first big break came after she won a short-story competition run by the Yorkshire Evening Post in 1973, and she began publishing novels professionally in 1975.
Over a long career, she published more than 40 books, including several stories set in the fictional village of Nydd Beck. She said her novels were romantic without being overly sweet or explicit, which helps explain their broad appeal. Her books were also translated into other languages and released in audiobook editions.
She continued writing into her 80s and died on June 27, 2017, at the age of 94. Her work remains a warm, distinctly regional strand of modern British romantic fiction.
