About the author

Born in Cartaxo on September 1, 1856, Marcelino António da Silva Mesquita became one of Portugal’s notable dramatists. Alongside his literary career, he trained as a doctor and also worked as a journalist, giving him a broad view of public life that fed into his writing.

He made his literary debut in the 1880s and became especially known for his plays. Reference works on Portuguese literature describe him above all as a dramatist, while also noting his poetry and fiction. His theater is often placed between late romantic and naturalist trends that shaped the Portuguese stage in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Mesquita was an important part of Lisbon’s cultural scene, both for his presence in theater repertoires and for what he wrote in the press. He died in Lisbon on July 7, 1919, but his name remains closely tied to the history of modern Portuguese drama.
