A founding member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, he moved easily between engineering, journalism, teaching, fiction, and the stage. His writing reflects a wide-ranging mind shaped by both technical study and literary life in Brazil and Portugal.

by Manuel Ferreira Garcia Redondo
Born in Rio de Janeiro on January 7, 1854, Manuel Ferreira Garcia Redondo was a Brazilian engineer, journalist, professor, short-story writer, and playwright. He studied in Coimbra, where he came into contact with Portuguese and Brazilian literary circles, and later built a career that joined intellectual work with public life.
Garcia Redondo became one of the founding members of the Academia Brasileira de Letras, taking chair 24. Alongside his literary work, he was active in journalism and teaching, and his reputation rested on the unusual breadth of his interests rather than on a single role.
