Born in Seville in 1897, Manuel Chaves Nogales grew up in a family shaped by journalism and the arts. He became a prominent Spanish reporter and writer, known for lively chronicles, travel writing, and biographical portraits that brought public events close to ordinary readers.
During the years of the Second Spanish Republic and the Spanish Civil War, he defended democratic values while rejecting both fascist and revolutionary violence. That independent stance runs through some of his best-known work, including A sangre y fuego (Blood and Fire), a book of Civil War stories drawn from the cruelty and confusion of the time.
Exile marked the last part of his life. He left Spain during the war, later lived in France, and died in London in 1944. Although his work was neglected for many years after his death, he has since been rediscovered as one of the essential Spanish journalists of the 20th century.
