About the author

Born in Rio Frio, Bragança, on April 7, 1858, Manuel António Ferreira Deusdado was a Portuguese pedagogue, philosopher, writer, and journalist. He became known for his strong interest in education and for the breadth of his work across teaching, criticism, and public debate.

He studied at the Curso Superior de Letras and went on to teach in Lisbon and the Azores. Ferreira Deusdado is especially remembered for publishing the Revista de Educação e Ensino, where he argued for reform of Portugal’s education system, with particular attention to the teaching of geography. He also wrote on philosophy, education, and criminology.

His career connected scholarship with practical educational concerns, and his writing shows a lasting interest in how schools could better form citizens and expand knowledge. He died in Lisbon on December 21, 1918.
