Manmohan Ghose

1869–1924

Among the earliest Indian poets to write in English, this lyrical voice moved between India and England and brought a distinctly personal, reflective style to his work. He is also remembered as the elder brother of Sri Aurobindo, though his own poetry stands in its own quiet light.

About the author

Born on January 19, 1869, Manmohan Ghose was an Indian poet and teacher, and is widely noted as one of the first Indians to write poetry in English. He was educated in England, including at Manchester Grammar School and Christ Church, Oxford, and his life connected literary circles in Britain and India.

Ghose wrote mainly in English and became known for refined, lyrical verse. Although he never became as famous as some of his contemporaries, his work has continued to interest readers of early Indian writing in English for its elegance, emotional depth, and literary ambition.

He died on January 4, 1924. He was the brother of Sri Aurobindo, but he is worth reading in his own right as an important early voice in Indian English poetry.
