About the author

Maria (Maikki) Elisabeth Friberg was a Finnish educator, journal editor, suffragist, and peace activist, born in 1861 and died in 1927. She became an important figure in the Finnish women’s movement and is widely remembered for combining practical organizing with public writing.

Friberg served as chair of the Finnish women’s rights organization Suomen Naisyhdistys and founded and edited Naisten Ääni (“Women’s Voice”), a journal that helped carry feminist ideas to a wider audience. Her work connected education, civic life, and women’s political rights in a way that made her an influential public voice of her time.

She also traveled widely and promoted understanding of Finland abroad. Today, she stands out as one of the notable early advocates who helped shape Finnish public discussion around women’s rights, social reform, and peace.
