About the author

Born in Kankaanpää in 1861, Maikki Friberg became one of the notable Finnish women of her generation to build a public life through education and writing. She worked as a teacher and later earned a doctorate in Bern, studying the history of folk high schools in the Nordic countries.

Friberg is best remembered for her work in the Finnish women’s movement. She led important women’s organizations and founded and edited Naisten Ääni (Women’s Voice), a journal that helped bring debates about equality and social change to a wider audience.

She also travelled widely in Europe and beyond, learning about education and civic life while promoting knowledge of Finland abroad. Alongside her work for women’s rights, she was active in peace and temperance causes, leaving behind a legacy of practical reform, public engagement, and determined advocacy.
