About the author

Born in Turku in 1851 and later active in Helsinki, he was a Finnish historian, professor, editor, and prolific author. He served as an extraordinary professor of general history at the University of Helsinki from 1883 to 1924, and his research ranged from seventeenth-century European history to Finnish biographical and intellectual history.

He is especially associated with major historical works on Finland, including Finlands historia, and with biographical writing on important Finnish cultural figures. Beyond his own books, he also played a lasting role in literary life as editor of Finsk Tidskrift and as a co-founder and longtime chair of the Swedish Literature Society in Finland.

Remembered today as both a scholar and a man of letters, he wrote in Swedish and helped preserve and interpret Finland’s cultural memory for later generations.
