About the author

Born in Denmark in 1819, Magdalene Thoresen later settled in Norway and built a remarkable literary career that stretched across fiction, drama, memoir, and travel writing. She became known not only for her books and plays, but also for her public lectures and her sharp, observant writing about people and places.

Thoresen is often remembered as one of the earliest women in Norway to support herself through writing, which made her an unusual and important figure in 19th-century Scandinavian literature. Her work often drew on coastal life, family relationships, and emotional conflicts, and she developed a reputation for energy, independence, and a strong public presence.

She also had a close connection to Norway’s literary world through her family: her daughter Suzannah married Henrik Ibsen. Magdalene Thoresen died in 1903, but she remains a notable early voice among women writers in the Nordic countries.
