About the author

Very little seems to be known for certain about this author today, which makes her an intriguing figure. Contemporary catalog records and later reprints connect her with the French book Les jeux des jeunes demoiselles from 1820, and some library and bookseller descriptions identify her as a French governess or institutrice.

English-language readers usually meet her through Healthful Sports for Young Ladies, a translation published in London in 1822. The book was illustrated from drawings by Jean Dugourc, translated into English, and presented as a guide to active games for girls, mixing practical instruction with short moral tales and a light, playful tone.

What survives most clearly is the spirit of her writing: she argued that young women should have regular exercise and cheerful outdoor amusements rather than only sedentary pastimes. Even if the details of her life remain elusive, her book stands out as an early and unusual defense of movement, health, and recreation for girls.
