About the author

Born in 1866, M. S. Wellby wrote under the name M. S. (Montagu Sinclair) Wellby. He is identified in library and ebook records as the author of Through Unknown Tibet, first published in 1898, a travel narrative based on an expedition from India across Tibet and onward toward China.

His writing belongs to the great age of Victorian travel books: direct, observant, and driven by the appeal of places that were little known to British readers at the time. Catalog and bookseller records also connect him with 'Twixt Sirdar and Menelik, published after his death.

Wellby died in 1900, and his reputation rests largely on the survival of these expedition narratives, which still interest readers drawn to exploration history, Central Asia, and classic travel writing.
