About the author

Born in London in 1853, Michael Morris Oppenheim first trained in medicine at University College Hospital Medical School. He later worked as a surgeon on merchant ships, an experience that appears to have sparked his lasting interest in maritime and naval history.

Without formal historical training, he built a strong reputation through painstaking archival research. Between 1891 and 1894 he published articles in The English Historical Review that were later developed into A History of the Administration of the Royal Navy and of Merchant Shipping in Relation to the Navy, a pioneering study of how naval power was organized behind the scenes.

Oppenheim also edited important historical volumes for the Navy Records Society, helping make original naval documents more accessible to other readers and researchers. He died in Rome in 1927, but his work is still remembered as an early foundation for the study of English naval administration.
