About the author

Born in Zutphen on September 7, 1868, Margo Sybranda Everdina Scharten-Antink was a Dutch writer and poet. Dutch and English reference sources agree that she wrote fiction as well as poetry, and that she spent her final years in Florence, where she died on November 27, 1957.

She began publishing young, and Dutch literary references note that she first worked as a teacher of French before marrying the writer Carel Scharten in 1902. She is especially remembered for her realistic prose, with Sprotje often singled out as her best-known work.

In her later career, she and Carel Scharten also collaborated on books, and the couple received a bronze medal in the 1928 Olympic art competitions for De nar uit Maremmen. Her work keeps her place among notable Dutch women writers of her era.
