About the author

Born in Zutphen in 1868, Margo Sybranda Everdina Scharten-Antink was a Dutch writer who published poetry and prose. She began writing young, and Dutch literary sources note that she debuted as a girl with a feuilleton in the Bergen-op-Zoomse Courant.

She became especially known for realistic fiction, with Sprotje often singled out as one of her best-known works. In 1902 she married the writer Carel Scharten, and the two later wrote several novels together, becoming a notable literary partnership in Dutch letters.

Later in life she lived in Florence, where she died in 1957. A striking footnote to her career came in 1928, when she and Carel Scharten won a bronze medal in the Amsterdam Olympic art competitions for De nar uit Maremmen.
