Born in London on 7 August 1876, Malcolm Sterling Mackinlay wrote under the name Sterling MacKinlay. He is remembered as a British author whose interests ranged across music, biography, and fiction.

His books include Garcia the Centenarian and His Times, a study of the celebrated singing teacher Manuel Garcia, and Antoinette Sterling and Other Celebrities, which drew on artistic and musical circles close to his family. He also wrote Reparation (1928), a near-future novel later noted by science-fiction reference works for its political imagination.

Mackinlay died in London on 10 January 1952. Though he is not widely known today, his writing offers an interesting mix of cultural history and speculative thought from the early twentieth century.
