About the author

Born in Kilmany, Scotland, on December 24, 1829, Marjory Horsburgh grew up in Edinburgh and London. She became a prolific writer of fiction for children and young adults, and she also edited the periodical Children's Hour.

She frequently published anonymously or simply as M. H., which helps explain why many book catalogs list her as Matilda Horsburgh. Her books include The Story of a Red Velvet Bible, The Sangreal, Little Snowdrop and her Golden Casket, Little Hazel, the King's Messenger, and The Royal Banner.

Later in life she married the physician Andrew Halliday Douglas in 1882. She died in Edinburgh on November 9, 1902. I wasn't able to confirm a reliable portrait image from the sources I found, so no profile image is included.
