by M. H. (Matilda Horsburgh)
Born Marjory Horsburgh in Kilmany, Scotland, on December 24, 1829, she is also recorded under the name Matilda Horsburgh and sometimes appears with the spelling Horsbrugh. Reference sources connect her with a comfortable upbringing in Edinburgh and London, and later with the married name Douglas.
Writing as M. H., she produced a large body of Victorian fiction and devotional reading, much of it aimed at children and families. Surviving catalogs and library records link her to titles such as The Royal Banner; or, Gold and Rubies, "Thy kingdom come.": A tale for boys and girls, and Cottage Readings from Bible History.
Because information about her is scattered and sometimes inconsistent, modern records do not always agree on whether to call her Matilda or Marjory. What is clear is that she was a prolific 19th-century Scottish author whose books were written to entertain, instruct, and encourage faith.
