About the author

Born Mary Elizabeth Sweetman in 1859, she later became Mary Elizabeth Blundell and wrote under the name M. E. Francis. She was an Irish novelist, and contemporary accounts described her as one of the best-known women novelists of her day.

Her fiction often drew readers into rural settings and close-knit communities, with an eye for social detail and human relationships. A number of her works have remained in circulation through digital archives, including North, South and Over the Sea, Stepping Westward, Fiander's Widow, and Dorset Dear.

She died on March 9, 1930. Although not as widely remembered now as some of her contemporaries, her work still offers a vivid picture of popular fiction from her era and the appeal of stories rooted in ordinary life.
