About the author

Born in Scottsbluff County, Nebraska, in 1934, he spent part of his childhood in Colorado and later grew up in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Sources say he studied at the University of Oregon and Northwest Christian University, earned a graduate degree from Butler University, completed doctoral work in international relations at American University, and also pursued linguistics and French studies in Brussels.

Much of his professional life was devoted to education and international economic development. During the mid-1960s he worked as a teacher and school administrator in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, then moved to Washington, DC in 1968 to work with American University’s Foreign Area Studies division.

He is credited as a co-author of Area Handbook for Romania and related reference works in the Area Handbook series. Later, he joined the National Cooperative Business Association, where he led rural development programs in Africa and later Asia, and he also worked as a consultant on development projects in other regions.
