Born in Welsh Run, Pennsylvania, on December 17, 1858, he graduated from Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg in 1883. After a short time as a school principal in Maryland, he moved to Iowa, eventually settling in Cedar Rapids, where he studied law before turning toward business and publishing.
He became closely identified with the Torch Press in Cedar Rapids and was known as a publisher, writer, and enthusiastic supporter of books and printing. He also wrote and helped compile works including History of Linn County Iowa, and he developed a lasting interest in literary figures such as Leigh Hunt.
Beyond publishing, he was active in Cedar Rapids civic and cultural life, including the library and art community. He died in 1933, leaving behind a reputation as one of Iowa's notable early printers and literary citizens.
