About the author

Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1803, Lunsford Lane was enslaved from birth but worked relentlessly to purchase his own freedom and later help secure freedom for members of his family. He became known for his determination, business skill, and refusal to accept the limits slavery tried to place on his life.

After gaining freedom, Lane remained in North Carolina for a time, where he faced increasing danger and pressure. He eventually moved north and became active in the antislavery movement, speaking publicly about his experiences and publishing an autobiographical narrative that helped abolitionist audiences understand the realities of slavery and racial oppression.

Lane died in 1879, but his life story continues to matter because it shows both the brutality of slavery and the courage it took to resist it. His memoir remains an important firsthand account of survival, family loyalty, and the long struggle for freedom.
