Born in 1822, Luís Augusto Rebelo da Silva was a Portuguese writer, historian, journalist, and politician. He became known as one of the most productive authors of Portuguese Romanticism, publishing fiction, historical writing, and essays while also taking part in public debate through newspapers and magazines.

His historical interests were especially important to his reputation. He wrote major works on Portugal's past, including studies of the 17th and 18th centuries, and was valued for bringing history to a broad reading public in an engaging literary style. Alongside his writing, he also served in political life, holding offices such as deputy, peer of the realm, and minister.
