Born in Rome on November 13, 1821, Luigi Capranica del Grillo came from a noble family and first served in the Papal Guards. He later devoted himself to literature, building a career as a novelist and dramatist while also taking part in the patriotic culture of nineteenth-century Italy.
After settling in Milan, he published historical and patriotic works that helped make his name with a broad reading public. Reference sources describe him as especially drawn to historical subjects, and his fiction is often remembered for combining narrative energy with an interest in Italy’s political past.
Capranica died in Milan on January 7, 1891. Today he is chiefly remembered as a versatile man of letters whose novels, plays, and historical storytelling reflect the spirit of the Italian Risorgimento.
