About the author

Ludwik Bruner (April 15, 1871 – December 5, 1913) was a Polish chemist, literary critic, poet, short story writer, and translator. In literature he is best known by the pen name Jan Sten, a name under which he published criticism and creative work.

Alongside his writing, Bruner had a serious scientific career. He became a professor at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków and is remembered as an early figure in Polish physical chemistry, including work connected with the first physical chemistry unit in Poland.

That unusual mix of science and literature gives his life a special interest today. He belonged to a generation of writers and thinkers who crossed boundaries between disciplines, and his legacy survives both in Polish literary history and in the history of modern chemistry.
