Born in Jena on December 19, 1791, Ludwig von Döderlein was a German classical philologist who later taught at the University of Erlangen. He became known for careful scholarship in Greek and Latin and for a long academic career devoted to language, interpretation, and education.
He is especially remembered for works on Latin synonymy and for editions and studies of ancient authors, including Homer. Writing in a clear, practical way, he produced reference works that remained useful well beyond his lifetime, especially for readers trying to grasp fine shades of meaning in classical languages.
Döderlein died in Erlangen on November 9, 1863. Though not a household name today, he played an important part in 19th-century philology and in the scholarly tradition that shaped how classical texts were taught and read.
