About the author

Born in Pfullendorf in 1854 and later dying in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1925, Ludwig Neumann was a German geographer, university teacher, and schoolteacher. Reliable biographical records also identify him as a professor in Freiburg im Breisgau.

Neumann is best remembered as the author of Der Schwarzwald, a book that presents the Black Forest as both a physical landscape and a lived-in cultural region. The surviving descriptions of the work show his interest in geology, scenery, and the everyday human side of the area, which makes his writing especially approachable for readers who enjoy place-based nonfiction.

Although he is not widely known today outside specialist or regional circles, his work stands as a clear example of early modern geography written for general readers as well as students. He wrote in a way that connected facts about land and environment with a sense of local character.
