About the author

Born in Vienna in 1855 and dying in Freudenstadt in 1931, Ludwig Gurlitt was a German reform educator, teacher, and writer. Biographical reference sources describe him as a leading figure in educational reform, and note that he studied in Göttingen and Berlin before working as a Gymnasium teacher in Hamburg and Berlin.

Gurlitt became known for criticizing rigid schooling and for promoting a more individual, humane approach to education. Reference entries connect his ideas with the wider reform pedagogy movement, and some describe his work as drawing on personality-centered education, art education, and examples from English schools.

He also published extensively, which helped spread his influence beyond the classroom. Today he is mainly remembered as part of the German-speaking reform education tradition of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
