About the author

Born in Kälviä in 1853, Lucina Hagman became one of the best-known advocates for women’s rights in Finland. Trained as a teacher, she worked in education for many years and strongly supported co-education at a time when that idea was still controversial.

She played a leading role in Finland’s early women’s movement, including work with the Feminist Association Unioni and the Martha organization. When Finland introduced full political rights for women, she was elected to parliament in 1907, placing her among the first women MPs in the world.

Hagman was also a writer who published on education and women’s issues, as well as biographical works. She remained active in public life for decades, and her long career linked classroom teaching, social reform, and the fight for a more equal society.
