About the author

Born Louise Revoil in Aix-en-Provence in 1810, she became known as Louise Colet after marrying the composer Hippolyte Colet and moving to Paris. There she established herself as a writer, publishing poetry and fiction and winning recognition from the Académie française.

Her career ranged widely, including verse, novels, plays, and autobiographical writing. Reference sources describe her as a French poet and novelist, and note that her literary reputation in her own lifetime was significant, even if she is now often introduced through her connections to better-known male writers.

She died in Paris in 1876. Today, she is often rediscovered as a strong and ambitious literary figure of 19th-century France whose work deserves attention in its own right.
