Louis E. Newman is an American scholar, teacher, and author whose work spans Jewish ethics, religion, and undergraduate education. He is the John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor of Religious Studies, emeritus, at Carleton College, and he later served at Stanford University as Dean of Academic Advising and Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education from 2016 to 2022.

Alongside his academic career, he has written books for both classroom and general readers. His published work includes Thinking Critically in College: The Essential Handbook for Student Success, as well as books on Jewish ethics and repentance. Across these projects, he is known for explaining complex ideas in a direct, approachable way.
