Lilian Staveley

Born Lilian Louise Bowdoin, she was an English Christian writer and mystic from an affluent family with Huguenot roots. Sources agree that she lived a largely outwardly conventional life, while her deeper spiritual life remained mostly hidden from those around her.

Her best-known books are The Prodigal Returns, The Romance of the Soul, and The Golden Fountain. These works were published anonymously during her lifetime, and later readers came to recognize them as deeply personal reflections on prayer, spiritual longing, and union with God.

What makes her especially memorable is the contrast between her private life and the intensity of her inner voice. Later editions and collections helped bring her writing to new readers, and she is still valued for making mystical Christian experience feel direct, human, and accessible.
