A Finnish novelist and businesswoman, she wrote emotionally charged fiction about ambition, disappointment, and the complicated lives of artists and women in the early 20th century. Her work offers a glimpse of a lesser-known voice in Finland’s literary past.

by Liina Röösgrén
Born Aliina Fredrika Kataja on February 7, 1882, Liina Röösgrén was a Finnish writer and businesswoman. She was also known earlier by the surname Kettunen, and later as Röösgrén.
Her debut was the two-part artist novel Murtuneita toiveita. Reference works and library sources identify her as part of Finland’s literary scene in the first half of the 20th century, and later scholarship has noted her among women who wrote artist novels in Finland.
She died on June 16, 1945. Although she is not widely known today, her books remain of interest as examples of early 20th-century Finnish popular and literary fiction, especially for readers curious about overlooked women writers.
