1808–1870
A 19th-century Dutch writer best remembered for lively poems and books for children, he also moved in literary circles that included well-known names of his day. His work has an easy musical feel, shaped by both classroom life and a lasting love of verse.

by Lieuwe Schipper
Born in Zaandam on September 30, 1808, Lieuwe Schipper was a Dutch poet and children's writer. Sources agree that he worked as a schoolteacher, and later lived in Arnhem; he died in Velp on October 7, 1870.
Schipper wrote many books for young readers, including collections of poems and verses for children. Contemporary and later reference pages describe him as a respected kinderdichter, and note that Nicolaas Beets was involved with his early work.
He also seems to have had a wide literary network. ZaanWiki records that in 1834 he began compiling a Vriendenrol, gathering contributions from prominent Dutch writers such as Beets, Bilderdijk, Da Costa, Van Lennep, Potgieter, and Tollens.
