by Lewis Parker
Born in Toronto in 1926, Lewis Parker built a long career as an illustrator, painter, and muralist whose work focused on Canadian history. He was especially known for detailed historical scenes and for paintings connected to North American Indigenous cultures, earning a reputation for careful research as well as visual storytelling.
Alongside his gallery and mural work, he illustrated children’s books and educational material used widely in Canada. His art appeared in publications and projects for media, schools, and public institutions, helping generations of readers picture people, places, and daily life from the past.
Parker continued working over a career that spanned about six decades. He died in 2011, but his paintings and illustrations remain closely associated with Canadian historical art and children’s nonfiction publishing.
