About the author

Born on September 6, 1814, near Meppen in what is now Germany, Levin Schücking studied law in Munich, Heidelberg, and Göttingen before turning away from a legal career and devoting himself to writing. He became known as a novelist and journalist, and many of his books drew on Westphalian settings and history.

Schücking moved in important literary circles early in life. His family had ties to the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, and he is remembered as part of the world around her as well as for his own long writing career. Contemporary and later reference works describe him as a notably popular author, even if his books are less widely read today.

He died on August 31, 1883, in Pyrmont. For listeners interested in 19th-century German fiction, his work offers a window into the tastes of his era, blending storytelling, local color, and historical atmosphere.
