About the author

Born on October 15, 1837, in Posen, Prussia (now Poznań, Poland), Leo Koenigsberger studied in Berlin and became part of the strong German mathematical tradition of the 19th century. He held university posts in Greifswald, Heidelberg, and Vienna, and later returned to Heidelberg, where he spent much of his career.

Koenigsberger worked in several areas of mathematics, especially differential equations and mathematical physics. Alongside his research, he became well known as a historian of mathematics and science, writing substantial biographies of major figures including Jacobi, Helmholtz, and Weierstrass.

He died on December 15, 1921, in Heidelberg. Today he is often remembered as a scholar who helped preserve the story of modern mathematics while also contributing to it directly.
