About the author

Born in Turin in 1903, Leo Ferrero was an Italian writer, playwright, and critic. He was the son of historian Guglielmo Ferrero and Gina Lombroso, and he grew up in a deeply literary and scholarly world that helped shape his broad cultural interests.

Ferrero became associated with important Italian literary circles between the wars, including the milieu around Solaria, and he wrote fiction, essays, and works for the stage. Sources describe him as especially drawn to French culture and to a more open, international idea of literature, which set him apart in the tense political climate of Fascist Italy.

His life ended very early in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1933. Even so, he left behind the image of a gifted, restless author whose work connected Italian letters with a wider European conversation.
