About the author

Born in Pest on February 7, 1839, and dying in Budapest on April 2, 1905, Lenke Beniczkyné Bajza was a Hungarian writer and journalist. She began publishing in the 1850s, and her work appeared in contemporary newspapers and magazines as well as in book form.

She came from a literary family as the daughter of the poet József Bajza. Sources also note that she became a member of the Petőfi Society in 1878, a sign of the respect she had earned in Hungarian literary life.

Her fiction includes novels and shorter prose, and many of her works circulated widely enough to remain available in digital libraries today. For listeners discovering her now, she offers a window into 19th-century Hungarian storytelling, especially the world of popular fiction written for a broad reading audience.
