About the author

Born Magdalena Pichler in Glonn, Bavaria, on October 30, 1881, Lena Christ became known as a German writer whose work was closely tied to Bavarian life and speech. She published under the name Lena Christ and built a reputation for writing that felt candid, earthy, and emotionally sharp.

Her breakthrough book, Erinnerungen einer Überflüssigen (published in 1912), is an autobiographical novel shaped by her difficult childhood and troubled family life. She is also remembered for works such as Die Rumplhanni and Matthias Bichler, which helped secure her place in Bavarian literature.

Although her literary career lasted only a few years, her books left a lasting impression. She died in Munich on June 30, 1920, and is still regarded as an important writer of early 20th-century German and Bavarian literature.
