About the author

Very little firm biographical information about this author seems to survive, and library records identify her only in brief form. One catalog entry gives her as "Leila Lee, -1900", which suggests she died in 1900, but I could not confirm further details such as her birth year, full name, or background.

What can be confirmed is that she wrote Wee Wee Songs for Our Little Pets, published in New York by Blakeman & Mason in 1859. The book is a collection of short children's verses aimed at very young readers, with an emphasis on kindness, obedience, religion, and the small pleasures of home and animals.

Because so little personal history is readily documented, her reputation now rests mainly on that surviving book. Even so, the poems offer a clear sense of her voice: earnest, affectionate, and closely tuned to the world of 19th-century childhood.
