author
1852–1938
A prominent Episcopal preacher and church leader, he wrote sermons, religious essays, and reflective books shaped by years in major pulpits in Boston and New York. His work blends pastoral warmth with an interest in public life, faith, and modern thought.
Born in New York City in 1852, he studied at the General Theological Seminary and was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1877. He went on to serve as rector of Emmanuel Church in Boston from 1878 to 1904, and later became rector of St. Bartholomew's Church in New York.
Alongside his church work, he was a prolific author. Listings in The Online Books Page and other library records show a wide range of sermons, addresses, and books, including The Winning of the Soul and Other Sermons, Moral Leadership and Other Sermons, The crisis of the churches, and English ways and by-ways.
