About the author

Born in Rauma on July 19, 1895, and dead in Helsinki on January 4, 1932, he was a Finnish writer, journalist, and active Esperanto enthusiast. He studied for a time in a teacher seminary, but his career took him in other directions.

He spent several years in Australia, where he worked among other things as the editor of an English-language newspaper. That experience shaped his best-known writing, including Tropiikin kuvia, a book based on his observations and experiences in Australian New Guinea.

Alongside his literary work, he was also known in Finnish Esperanto circles. His career was relatively short, but his writing stands out for opening a window onto places and cultures that were far from most Finnish readers of his time.
