About the author

Born in Harlingen on July 7, 1863, Laurentius Knappert studied theology in Leiden and Amsterdam, and earned his doctorate in 1887 with a dissertation on folklore and the history of religion. He went on to serve as a minister in several Dutch towns, including Kwadijk, Dokkum, and Assen.

Knappert later became a professor at Leiden University, where he taught church history and related subjects. Alongside his academic work, he wrote widely on Dutch religious life, cultural history, and social customs, showing a gift for making serious scholarship readable and lively.

He died on June 4, 1943. Remembered as both a scholar and a man of faith, Knappert left behind books and essays that connect theology with the broader textures of Dutch history and daily life.
