Laura Ann Young Pinney was born on November 5, 1849, in Washington County, Iowa. She married Henry Beers Pinney on May 6, 1876, and later lived in California, where she died on December 21, 1943, in Palo Alto.
Pinney wrote Within the Golden Gate: A Souvenir of San Francisco Bay, a lyrical portrait of the Bay Area published in the 1890s. She also authored A Brief History of Thomas Young and His Descendants and Genealogy of the Pinney Family in America, reflecting her deep interest in preserving family records and local history.
She was described as an active Presbyterian, Bible-class teacher, and participant in missionary, social, and civic work. She was also involved with the Pacific Coast Woman’s Press Association, serving as its president in 1903–04.
