author
b. 1849
Best remembered for a lyrical 1893 tribute to San Francisco Bay, this little-known California writer also preserved family history in print. Her surviving books suggest a writer drawn to place, memory, and the people connected to them.

by Laura Ann Young Pinney
Laura Ann Young Pinney was an American author born in 1849. Library and public-domain records connect her with at least two surviving works: Within the Golden Gate: A Souvenir of San Francisco Bay (1893), an illustrated poetic celebration of the Bay Area, and Genealogy of the Pinney Family in America (1924), published in San Francisco.
Those books show an appealing range. In one, she writes with a local, scenic eye for the landscapes around San Francisco Bay; in the other, she turns to family history and documentation. Together they suggest a writer interested both in the beauty of a place and in the stories of the people who came before.
Reliable biographical details about her life are limited in the sources readily available online, so much of her personal story remains faint. No suitable verified portrait image was found from the pages reviewed.
