About the author

Born in Kuortane in 1811, Lars Jakob Stenbäck became known in Finland as a poet, priest, and educator. He studied in Turku and also spent time in Uppsala, where he pursued aesthetic and art-historical studies before completing degrees that led him into both teaching and church work.

Stenbäck wrote poetry in Swedish and is especially remembered for religious and reflective verse. Alongside his literary work, he served as a schoolman and later as a clergyman, and his hymns and devotional writing helped secure his place in Finland’s cultural history.

He died in 1870 in Isokyrö. Though not as internationally famous as some of his contemporaries, he remains an important figure in the tradition of Finnish Swedish-language poetry and sacred song.
