About the author

Born in Kuortane in 1811, Lars Jakob Stenbäck was a Finnish-Swedish poet, priest, and educator. He studied in Turku and Helsinki, spent time in Uppsala pursuing aesthetic and art-historical studies, and later completed theological studies before being ordained in 1842.

Stenbäck was closely connected with Finland’s early revivalist movement, especially the awakening associated with Paavo Ruotsalainen. Alongside his church work, he taught and served in academic settings, and he became known as both a religious thinker and a literary voice whose poems and hymn texts brought together introspection, emotion, and faith.

He died in Isokyrö in 1870. In Finnish literary history, he is remembered not only as a clergyman but as a poet whose work helped give the religious life of his time a memorable and personal language.
