About the author

Born Mary Elizabeth Hawker in 1848, she was a Scottish-born writer who published under the pen name Lanoe Falconer from 1890 onward. She wrote novels and short fiction, and her work quickly attracted attention in the 1890s for its polish, intelligence, and distinctive atmosphere.

Her best-known books include Mademoiselle Ixe, The Hôtel d'Angleterre and Other Stories, and Cecilia de Noël. Readers often remember her for combining sharp social observation with mystery, psychological tension, and, at times, a touch of the supernatural.

Falconer died in 1908, the same year Cecilia de Noël appeared. Though not as widely known now as some of her Victorian contemporaries, she remains an appealing rediscovery for listeners who enjoy literary fiction with wit, style, and an eerie shimmer at the edges.
