Best known for bringing Howard R. Garis’s Uncle Wiggily stories to life, this American illustrator gave early children's books a warm, playful look that helped shape their charm. Working under the signature "Lang Campbell," he became a familiar visual presence in popular storybooks of the early 1900s.

by Lang Campbell
Born in Carbondale, Illinois, in 1882, Lansing Campbell was an American illustrator who often signed his work as Lang Campbell. He is most closely associated with children's books and is especially remembered for illustrating many entries in Howard R. Garis's Uncle Wiggily series.
His drawings helped define the light, friendly tone of those stories, making him a recognizable name to young readers and families in the early twentieth century. His work also appears in public-domain editions and library records under the name Lang Campbell, which is how many readers still encounter him today.
Campbell died in 1937. Though he is not as widely known now as some writers of his era, his illustrations remain an important part of the lasting appeal of classic American children's books.
